This is a wooden floor restoration project we completed in Clitheroe, Lancashire. There are clear and definite ways in which your wooden floors will show they are nearing the time of restoration. As with any other issue, it is important to pay attention to these signs. This will allow you to get the most from your wood floors. The longer you leave it, the worse the problem will get. Unfortunately, there is no magic wand, so it is therefore important to look out for some of the following key factors.
Large Gaps
These may start to appear between your boards. The cause of this issue comes from the fact that wood will shrink during the winter and expand during the summer. This is a natural process but can cause problems. There is a solution to this. You can fill these gaps during the wooden floor restoration process using a gap-filling mixture. Always check that your wood floor has sufficient support underneath the floor before fixing any issues. If the floor does not have appropriate support, the product will likely crack and fall out due to movement.
Cupping
Floorboards, when aging and not appropriately protected can start to cup. This is usually caused by a moisture or water issue beneath the boards. The individual boards will work like a sponge to soak up any moisture. This can start to look quite unsightly. You will need to dehumidify the space. More advice is available from professional wood floor restoration experts as to whether further action is needed.
Crowning
This is the opposite issue to cupping. The source of the problem is thought to be similar though. If water or moisture lands on top of the boards. This essentially works to expand the middle of the board instead of the edges. Again, the entire area needs to be thoroughly dried. You can then sand and restore the floor.
There are more major issues that you may find with your wooden floors. These may include mould, mildew or even rotting. Your chosen floor restoration expert will be able to offer individual advice on whether this can be fixed or whether you need to consider part replacement.
