Damaged hardwood flooring can be caused by so many different reasons. Issues can stem immediately if the preparation of the sub-floor is not completed correctly. Incorrect installation can cause further issues. Scratches, dents and water damage are also other areas where damage will need to be sorted.
The following information has been put together to help you understand the reason behind the damage. Furthermore, how you can best deal with it.
Damaged Hardwood Flooring
Reason 1: Damage caused by improper preparation
Any wood floor is laid onto a sub-floor (underneath). It needs to be level and dry. Any variation to this means that you will likely experience movement or cracking. Moisture can start to warp your wood boards from underneath, causing further and ongoing issues.
Reason 2: Damage caused by incorrect installation
The main reason that can cause future damage after incorrect installation is not leaving an expansion gap. This gap should be left around the perimeter of the wooden floor. Any natural wood floor needs to expand and contract with varying temperatures. A wood floor needs room to move. If the boards don’t have this, they will likely warp.
Reason 3: Scratches or dents
Scratches and dents are caused by everyday usage of any wood floor. Generally, these will be minor issues and can go unnoticed. However, over time, combined these issues can start to detract from the overall appearance of your floor.
Reason 4: water damage
Any standing water on your wood floor will cause the boards to bend and distort. Furthermore, it can discolour the surface as the water soaks in. There are some instances where water damage can simply be fixed. However, major water damage will require extensive restoration.
